Fungi are microorganisms that digest organic substances from their surroundings to get nutrients instead of animals that eat or plants that make their food. Fungi are multicellular, and once they develop, they release seed-like spores that float around the air and look for a new area to contaminate.

What does mold need to form and grow?

Water leaks that do not get treated right away cause many cases of mold damage in Cocoa. For example, if your toilets or pipes inside your office bathroom develop a slow leak, fungi can grow. A fungus only needs the following three things to form and survive:

  • Food Source: Mold feeds off of any material inside your office that is organic. Wood or paper compose organic materials include your structural components.
  • Temperature: Most of the types of molds commonly found in buildings survive best when the temperature is between 68 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Moisture: Most fungi need a lot of moisture to survive, but some can survive at humidity levels of 65% and higher. To inhibit mold growth, the relative humidity inside a structure should stay below 60%.

How does mold get worse over time?

The longer mold sits there, the more it can grow and reproduce. Once a fungus forms, it grows structures called hyphae in all directions. These hyphae then release spores into the air for reproduction purposes. The more time mold has to grow, the harder it can be to remove.

How do you remove fungi once it has formed?

Once a fungus has developed, it often needs removing by sanding or soda blasting in a way that prevents its spores from spreading. Before removing mold, we set up a containment chamber with an air scrubber attached to it that creates negative air pressure and traps any particles dislodged by the removal process. Any materials removed then get disposed of in a sealed plastic bag.

For help with keeping mold from spreading to previously unaffected areas of your office in Rockledge or Cape Canaveral, call SERVPRO of Central Brevard at (321) 638-4947.
