Storms in Merritt Island Pack a Punch, but They Are No Match for SERVPRO

Flood water from a recent storm caused indoor flooding. SERVPRO was able to remove the water and dry the affected areas to mitigate damage.

Flooding is, unfortunately, part of life for Merritt Island residents. The weather that hits our community also provides perfect conditions for outdoor sports, and having Cape Canaveral in our backyard is a plus for many residents.  

Preserving Merritt Island homes after flood damage requires homeowners to remove standing water and take other steps quickly. At SERVPRO, our restoration teams train to restore every local home to its pre-flood condition so residents can return to their homes and begin rebuilding their lives.  

When the water in a home is from outside flooding, it contains contaminants like soil, animal feces and urine, fertilizer, and other particles dangerous to property and health. To reduce the risk to homeowners and our personnel, technicians wear protective clothing and then spray standing water and affected property with a powerful anti-bacterial agent.  

Next, team members use pumps to draw out the water. They pump the contaminated water into the nearest sewer. If an opening is not available, they pump it into a tank truck for recycling at a water treatment facility. To remove water from carpets and off floors, SERVPRO specialists perform the same action using extraction wands.  

Since we cannot guarantee carpets are clean or safe after a flood, technicians remove them. Next, they spray the floors underneath them with another anti-bacterial cleaner. Once the cleaner dries, they draw off the rest of the water with air movers, dehumidifiers, and fans.  

For furniture and other personal property, technicians lift it off floors and onto blocks or remove it to another location. They clean upholstered furniture and fabrics with another anti-bacterial cleaner and wipe down wood and metal surfaces using sponges, cloths, and the same cleaner. Once completed, they use fans and air movers to increase circulation and dry them without further damage.
